Mira Murati is co-founder and CEO of Thinking Machines Lab, a research lab and product company whose mission is to build AI that extends human will and judgment. Most AI is trained by a handful of companies, frozen at release, and then rented by the people who use it. Thinking Machines lets people own their intelligence. It builds AI that people and organizations can customize, the tools to train it without surrendering proprietary data, and interfaces for live collaboration between people and machine intelligence. It publishes its research because the power to shape AI requires understanding how it is made.

Before founding Thinking Machines in December 2024, Mira was Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI, where she oversaw research, product, and safety. She led the development and release of ChatGPT, GPT-4, DALL-E, Codex, Sora, and the o-series reasoning models. ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months, faster than any internet application before it.

Earlier, she led product and engineering at Leap Motion, building interfaces for virtual and augmented reality. At Tesla, she worked on the Model X and early Autopilot systems.

Mira served on the United Nations High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence. TIME, Fortune, and the Financial Times count her among AI's most influential people. Born in Albania, she studied at Colby College and trained as an engineer at Dartmouth, returning in 2024 to receive an honorary doctorate.
