In 1956, the Dartmouth Summer Research Project launched the field of artificial intelligence. It was here in Hanover that the term was coined and the foundational question was asked: can machines solve problems once reserved for human minds? Seventy years later, Dartmouth will convene an anniversary conference to continue the conversation — this time focused not on what AI can do, but on what humans must do in its presence.

The original meeting asked how machines could think. This one asks a different set of questions: Where does AI genuinely improve human decision-making? And where must judgment remain human?

Over three days, that inquiry will draw leaders from government, industry, and academia, and mark the release of new research on the relationship between AI and human capability. This event is supported in part by The Rockefeller Foundation, which helped fund the original gathering in 1956.
